"What's the biggest thing you two actually disagree on?" A listener has finally called out the I agree, I agree tic on the podcast and demanded a real disagreement, so Dylan and Hayden open this one by actually trying to find the fault line. Spoiler, the split between teaching staff and non-teaching staff in schools gets a proper airing, and it's a more honest answer than either of them planned to give.
Then things get spicier. Should politics be explicitly taught in KS2? Not snuck in around the edges of PSHE, but on the timetable. The boys talk through whether primary aged children can genuinely engage with it, who decides what counts as balanced when every adult in the room has their own view, and what you actually do when a Year 5 asks the question you've been quietly hoping nobody would ask.
Next up, draconian behaviour policies. Listeners have sent in the ones they've witnessed or worked under. The rules that humiliated children, the systems that punished kids for things they couldn't control, and the policies that made absolutely no sense to anyone except the person who wrote them. Some of these are uncomfortable listening, and rightly so.
A teacher in a one form entry school wants practical help. She agrees setting could benefit her children but can't see how it works when there's only one class per year group. Dylan and Hayden actually try to solve it rather than wave it off, and the answer is more nuanced than mixed ability versus streamed.
Then the SATs week question every Year 6 teacher will feel in their bones. The listener has been told that after the morning's test, the entire afternoon has to be spent revising for tomorrow's paper. Every day. All week. She thinks it's ridiculous. The boys have thoughts.
And the closer. A listener has banned a cop out answer and asked Dylan and Hayden for the education opinion that genuinely gets people's backs up. Not the safe one. The one that might make a regular listener decide they're done with the pair of them. Both of them go for it.
Honest, funny, and not in the mood to play nice today.
