Bridget Phillipson is out, Lucy Powell is in, and if you are anything like most teachers, you know the name and very little else.

So this episode is the crash course on the woman now running education in England, and an honest attempt to work out whether any of it will actually change anything.

📋 Who Lucy Powell actually is
Born in Moss Side, state educated the whole way, MP for Manchester Central since a 2012 by election. She got into Oxford to read chemistry, lasted a year and left, having spoken since about feeling like a fish out of water as a northern state school girl doing science at Oxbridge. Dylan explains why that detail matters more than it looks.

👩‍🏫 The "her mum was a headteacher" argument
It is everywhere online, and Dylan pushes back on it hard. Hayden makes the case for empathy and lived proximity to the job. They do not entirely agree, and the disagreement is the good bit.

🎓 Should you have to have worked in a school?
The internet says yes, obviously, absolutely. Hayden spent a night thinking it through and came to a conclusion most teachers will not enjoy. Dylan, who has made a video arguing the opposite way, ends up closer to him than expected. The bit about the pool of MPs available for the job is worth sitting with.

📉 Her record, and why Dylan is still sceptical
Shadow Education Secretary under Corbyn for nine months. Education Select Committee for three years. On record wanting academies and free schools back under local authority oversight. Primary SPaG tests called ridiculous. League tables and Progress 8 described as measuring intake rather than teaching. Dylan makes a firm prediction about how much of that becomes government policy, and he is not hedging.

📄 The line in the sand
The SEND white paper says all schools should be in trusts. Lucy Powell's record says the opposite. Dylan explains why what happens next is the thing he will judge her on, and why "we are going to look at it" will not cut it.

💷 Pay, SATs and the Pearson mess
The 3.5% rise and the 1.8% schools are quietly expected to find themselves. The Key Stage 2 marking shambles that teachers saw coming months before the announcement. Whether she addresses any of it or rides the new leader wave instead.

🙌 The people nobody stands up for
The bit that might hit hardest. TAs, office staff, site managers, and a retirement at their old school that made Dylan think about who really keeps a school running.
